Another exclusive cover for Phoenix Comic-Con 2011. This one is for my good friend Raven Gregory’s “Fly” #1 being published by Zenescope Entertainment which officially hits store shelves in June but those attending this years show can snag this and get your copy a couple weeks early. 
This one was a LOT of fun to draw simply because it’s so ridiculous. Raven had been going through some personal turmoil so I swooped in and took him over to my house for a weekend where we loafed, played video games, ate fast food, watched movies and joked around all weekend. We started talking about how much good press the book has been getting and the first issue hasn’t even hit stores yet and how exciting this could be for him and the crew he worked with on the book. Raven primarily writes horror stories (Return/Beyond/Escape From Wonderland, The Waking, Se7en, etc.) so people assume this book is going to be about some bug that does crazy shit when they first hear about it. The book is actually a take on the superhero gender where there’s a powerfully addictive drug that gives ordinary people super human abilities including the ability of flight, so we laughed about doing a cover with a giant fly as a joke just to mess with people. Well, somewhere between “Clash of the Titans” and Jose Cuervo we actually came up with this layout and the joke started on a fast journey to becoming a reality.
We’ve had a split reaction so far. Seems people either love it or think it’s totally retarded so we won’t fully know the repercussions of drinking and drawing until Phoenix Con but I’m generally happy with the illustration itself so I hope people dig it.
